Sustainble food app for student.
Individual | 10 weeks | with Fruto Studio

Introduction

The project introduces a new sustainable food app called Jizoku, which means sustainable food in Japanese. It is for students who are willing to maintain a sustainable food eating pattern and who don’t have much budget but want to eat sustainably. It is called Jizoku, a mobile application that: provides an all-in-one platform for users to keep eating in a sustainable and cheap way. Project Development

Persona
A persona is constructed to represent the target user before the app prototype is created. Eleanor is the chosen persona, and she is a Korean student in the United Kingdom. She is unable to apply for college loans, therefore she must constantly work and save money. She's also on a diet and wants to eat healthily, so she's looking for low-cost, long-lasting food. She also uses her phone frequently and wants to keep track of everything.
User Jounery Map
In the persona, Eleanor searches for the cheapest sustainable food and purchases it at the grocery that the GPS has located, then scans the barcode of the goods and receipt to receive the payback. She also follows the recipes and keeps track of her meals in the food diary. She finds it difficult to maintain the habit, but she ultimately adjusts. She also saw savings and weight loss as a result of her efforts. She like the app and has told her friends and relatives about it.

Research

Before starting to think of the design of the prototype, I searched for the existing app. Since Jizoku consists of three functions (food diary, food offers and food recipes). I searched for different apps with different functions and got some ideas.
Food Offer
There is an app called “Shopmium”, which collaborates with the food supplier, holding cashback events to attract users to buy the food.

The most updated offer shown in “home”
Recipe
The app called “Tasty” is a recipe community in which user shares their food products by following the recipe in the app. I discovered that the picture should be attractive with different bright colours and the grid layout should look neat.

Design Requirement

Internation Accessbility
Eleanor in the Persona is a Korean studying in UK, she wants to continue her lifestyle with the app when she is in her home country. So the app needs to be accessible all around the world. The app also provide multiple language, it is suitable for people who speak a different language.

Conclusion

The project was a tremendous learning experience. Initially, I lacked knowledge about sustainable food, but research changed that. Interviews revealed students' limited awareness of sustainable eating.
Working in groups, we developed an elevator pitch, personas, and user journey maps, which laid a strong foundation.
Collaborating with others brought fresh and inspiring insights.
The most challenging part was creating the prototype. It taught me about app flow and design intricacies, highlighting the importance of user requirements. Incorporating others' feedback improved the project iteratively, and I gained empathy for users.
From understanding sustainable food to enhancing design skills and embracing iteration, this journey enriched my abilities and mindset for future projects.
